Paleo Dog Food

This recipe was created to tackle eczema, gastric issues and obesity in domestic dogs who were all on a premium dog food diet at great expense.

After two weeks on this diet all health issues disappeared and have never returned.

All ingredients are free range or organic where possible. I went with chicken/duck as the protein source as birds are the closest you can come to a natural diet for dogs. Sodium content is very low for kidney health reasons. Calcium is provided in the form of egg shells and cartilage.

This recipe makes around 3 to 4 kilograms of food.

Ingredients

  • 2 whole chickens

  • 500g chicken hearts

  • 500g chicken livers

  • 500g chicken gizzards

  • 200g frozen green beans

  • 200g frozen peas

  • 200g frozen carrots or butternut

  • 200g frozen sweet potato

  • 4 TBSP duck fat

  • 1/2 cup olive oil

  • 1 TBSP fresh grated turmeric

  • 2 TBSP sea salt - not iodised regular salt. Sea salt contains minerals.

  • 1 Litre water

  • 6 Eggs with shells

Method

  1. Cook all ingredients except the eggs in a pot on the stove in a low heat or in a slow cooker. It is ready when the chicken falls off the carcass.

  2. Remove chicken bones but keep the cartilage as this is a great source of calcium.

  3. Once cooled add the eggs and blend with a submersible blender.

  4. Decant into containers and store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze in ready to eat portion sizes.

How much to feed - depends on the breed and age of the animal. Domestic animals need far less food than we assume.

With this kind of food they reach satiety really quickly, so start with roughly the amount you would normally feed and wait to see when they naturally stop.

Puppies need to be fed more than once per day.

It is also possible to mix this up with dry food and gradually wean off the biscuits.

Please bear in mind I am not a vet. If your animal is not well or if you are concerned that they aren’t thriving you need to chat to your vet. You are welcome to share the recipe.
